Challenger takes aim at seat held by Gamrat

FILLMORE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) – We’re hearing from the woman who lost to state Rep. Cindy Gamrat last year in the race for the 80th House district’s seat.

Mary Whiteford said Tuesday she’ll challenge Gamrat for that seat next year. Whiteford says the sex scandal involving Gamrat and Lapeer’s Todd Courser is a distraction keeping Gamrat from adequately representing the people in the 80th district.

Whiteford said she hopes Gamrat will resign. If the seat were to become available, Whiteford said she’d be a candidate to replace her.

“I actually had no idea if I would run again, but when all this started transpiring, I’ve had hundreds of phone calls and emails from across my district here, saying, ‘Mary, would you consider running again,'” Whiteford said. “So, I just thought, and I prayed, and I talked to my family — and I decided, ‘You know what? I really could do this.'”

Whiteford spoke with WZZM 13 at the Fillmore Township offices because she says its in about the center of the 80th district. She identifies herself as a conservative Christian Republican and says her campaign to replace Gamrat is already underway.
