House Approves Psychiatric Bed Database for Mental Health Services and Update on Michigan CARES Hotline

House Approves Psychiatric Bed Database for Mental Health Services and Update on Michigan CARES Hotline

Many times, when an individual has a mental health crisis or is brought to the hospital by law enforcement, there are not enough psychiatric beds available to place the individual.

The House of Representatives approved my legislation that would require the Department of Health and Human Services to work with various stakeholders to develop and maintain a state database that contains information about the number and locations of available beds, and make this database accessible to facilities and providers.

This will allow us to get individuals the …

Tax relief for stillbirths gets unanimous vote in state House of Representatives

From the Detroit Free Press:

LANSING – The state House of Representatives voted unanimously Wednesday to restore tax relief for families who experience a stillbirth.

The bill was especially meaningful for state Rep. Julie Alexander, R-Hanover, whose daughter Amy Jo was stillborn on Christmas Day in 1995.

But we can acknowledge the baby, and provide some financial relief on expenses.”

There are roughly 550 to 650 stillbirths in Michigan each year, according to recent statistics. Families dealing with stillbirths often face thousands of dollars in expenses, …

Challenger takes aim at seat held by Gamrat

Mary Whiteford said Tuesday she’ll challenge Gamrat for that seat next year. Whiteford says the sex scandal involving Gamrat and Lapeer’s Todd Courser is a distraction keeping Gamrat from adequately representing the people in the 80th district.

Whiteford said she hopes Gamrat will resign. If the seat were to become available, Whiteford said she’d be a candidate to replace …

Candidate says she’s ready to take State Rep. Cindy Gamrat’s seat

A small business owner and former ER nurse is hoping to unseat State Representative Cindy Gamrat.

Gamrat is at the center of a sex and cover-up scandal in Lansing.

Republican Mary Whiteford says she’s ready to run for Gamrat’s seat, whether she resigns or not. Gamrat has not resigned, but she’s not taken the option off the table either.

“I’ve been mortified to find that the 90,000 people of Allegan County have had no representation. None at all,” Whiteford said.

Whiteford says she’s praying for Gamrat and her family. …
